A tour at the foot of the Traunstein, right beside the picturesque Traunsee.
The starting point for this tour is the turning car park "Unterm Stein" at the end of Traunsteinstraße. From the car park you can either follow the forest road into the Lainau valley or walk directly along the scenic east shore of the Traunsee.
The Sonnstein is Traunkirchen's local mountain. A brisk 1.5-hour climb to the summit rewards you with what is probably the most magnificent sunrise in the Salzkammergut. It is always impressive how the sun rises behind the Traunsee backdrop and bathes the landscape in warm, clear light. A must – especially in spring!
From mid-May to early June the daffodils are in bloom here
From the car park in the Hauergraben, a forest road takes you on foot to the meadow – and you are rewarded with a sea of daffodils.
This wonderful daffodil meadow is PRIVATE PROPERTY – so when visiting, please respect the rights of the landowners, who kindly tolerate people walking on the meadow and picking flowers.
When the snow melts in the Salzkammergut, water shoots out of the ground at the foot of the Schönberg, rising faster than it can drain away. Near the Mittereckerstüberl in Ebensee, this creates the Wiesensee – 2 hectares in size and 3 metres deep – which exists for only a few days. Then it vanishes again, as if it had never been there. It is what geologists call a "dead-ice hole". Truly beautiful and unique.

Austria's first dark sky park – certified by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) – is a protected night landscape whose aim is to preserve the natural darkness of the night sky, giving you a clear view of the world of stars above.
It is very important to us that a spirit of "respectful coexistence" is upheld in the Attersee-Traunsee Dark Sky Park and Nature Park.
